Traffic congestion amid public events on Hong Kong Island
*********************************************************

The Transport Department (TD) today (November 8) reminded members of the public that there will be a number of public events today and tomorrow. Traffic is anticipated to be very congested these two days, and motorists should avoid driving to the affected areas.

Special traffic and transport arrangements will be implemented from Causeway Bay to Central for a public procession this afternoon. A total of 63 bus routes and three green minibus routes operating in the affected areas will be temporarily diverted. A football match will also be held at the Hong Kong Stadium in the evening, and special traffic and transport arrangements will be implemented in So Kon Po and Causeway Bay. The TD anticipates that traffic from Causeway Bay to Central will be very busy for the whole day. Members of the public and motorists should pay attention to the special traffic arrangements in the affected areas, and use public transport as far as possible.

There will be another public procession in Central and Western District tomorrow afternoon. Traffic lanes on Queen's Road Central and Queen's Road West will be intermittently closed starting from about 2.30pm. It is anticipated that traffic in Central and Western District will be congested. Actual implementation of the traffic arrangement will be made depending on traffic and crowd conditions in the area. Motorists should drive safely, exercise tolerance and patience, and follow the instructions of the Police.

The TD also reminds members of the public and motorists that, in order to alleviate traffic congestion on Hong Kong Island, the pedestrian precincts at East Point Road in Causeway Bay and Chater Road in Central are suspended to allow traffic flow until further notice. The pedestrian precinct in Causeway Bay at Lockhart Road east of Cannon Street, East Point Road, and Great George Street west of Paterson Street originally from 4pm to midnight on Mondays to Fridays and from noon to midnight on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, is suspended to allow traffic flow.

The pedestrian precinct at the section of Chater Road between Pedder Street and Jackson Road in Central originally from 7am to midnight on Sundays and public holidays is also suspended. However, to facilitate a memorial event in Central tomorrow morning, a section of Chater Road between Ice House Street and Murray Road, Jackson Road, and a section of Connaught Road Central (westbound) between Jackson Road and Pedder Street will be closed intermittently between 10.30am and 11.25am. Motorists are advised to pay attention to the arrangement.

Regarding public transport services, a total of 205 bus routes are still affected today with eight bus routes suspended and 197 bus routes diverted. Among the affected bus routes, 80 routes travelling via Mong Kok are diverted due to the closure of a number of road sections in Mong Kok. A total of 20 green minibus routes travelling via Harcourt Road, Nathan Road and Argyle Street are still diverted or suspended or with service adjusted. Currently, the tram service between Percival Street and Paterson Street is still suspended. The MTR Corporation Limited continues to increase services for all urban lines to cope with passenger demand.

The TD's Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre will continue to monitor the road traffic situation and public transport services. For details of road closure, traffic diversion, suspension and route diversion of green minibus services, please refer to the TD's website (www.td.gov.hk).
