Ornately Decorated Textiles and Accessories of Chinese Ethnic Minorities Exhibition opens (with photos)

     The Ornately Decorated Textiles and Accessories of Chinese Ethnic Minorities Exhibition is open from today (November 7) to November 21 at the Exhibition Gallery of Sha Tin Town Hall. The exhibition showcases a variety of traditional costumes, baby carriers and silver ornaments of Chinese ethnic minority groups selected from the collection of the Special Researcher of the Dunhuang Academy, Ms Lee Mei-yin, including the rarely seen fish skin male attire of the Hezhe people, the bride's wedding gown of the Yi people, the "Hundred Birds Costume" of the Miao people and the lacquered leather armour of Yi people.

     There are more than 50 ethnicities in China, each having its own unique culture and customs. The exhibition features the craftsmanship of various ethnic minorities passed on from generation to generation. Through viewing the sewing and ingenious design of the exquisite costumes and accessories, citizens can probe into the spiritual outlook of each ethnicity and relish the very essence of Chinese culture - diversity and inclusiveness.

     Organised by the Sha Tin District National Education Committee (STDNEC), the exhibition is assisted by the Jao Tsung-I Academy and the Sha Tin District Office (STDO), and sponsored by the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education (CPCE) and the Sha Tin District Council (STDC).

     Officiating at today's opening ceremony were the Chairman of the Board of the Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture, Professor Lee Chack-fan; the Chairman of the STDC, Mr Ho Hau-cheung; the District Officer (Sha Tin), Ms Cora Ho; the Vice Chairman of the STDC and Honorary Advisor of the STDNEC, Mr Pang Cheung-wai; the Special Researcher of the Dunhuang Academy, Ms Lee; the Chairman of the STDNEC, Mr Pun Kwok-shan; the Vice-chairman of the STDNEC and Convenor of the Working Group (WG), Mr Wong Ka-wing; Senior Manager of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department Miss Joelza Liu; member of the CPCE Mr Wong Chun-fai; the Vice-chairman of the STDNEC and Vice-convenor of the WG, Ms Chan May-kuen; and Vice-convenor of the WG Mr Leung Ka-fai.

     The exhibition is open from 10am to 8pm. Admission is free for members of the public. Guided tours are available during the exhibition and citizens can participate in a number of workshops under the themes of "Chinese Qipao", "Chinese Button Knot" and "Chinese Needle Case" hosted by professional tutors who will share with them the cultural aspects of the traditional craftsmanship.
