InnoCarnival 2014 opens today (with photos/video)

     InnoCarnival 2014, organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission, opened today (November 1) at the Hong Kong Science Park in Sha Tin.

     The nine-day carnival, which runs from today until November 9, features a series of activities to help promote a culture of innovation and technology in the community.

     Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, said that this large annual event offered an excellent opportunity for members of the public to gain first-hand experience of the latest developments and achievements in innovation and technology in Hong Kong.

     He said that this year's InnoCarnival was the largest ever and offered a wide range of activities to showcase the close relations of technology to people's daily lives and its importance to the development of society.

     This year's InnoCarnival has three main themes, namely Intelligent Living, Quality Living and Green Living. More than 75 organisations including local universities, research and development (R&D) centres, government departments, professional bodies, technology enterprises and youth organisations have set up pavilions or booths to showcase their R&D achievements.

     About 50 talks and seminars, more than 350 InnoTech workshops and about 500 guided tour sessions are open to members of the public.

     Another highlight is the InnoFiesta, to be staged in the afternoon on November 1 and 8. The programme combines technology, magic, music and dancing performances.

     Other guests attending the opening ceremony today included the Secretary-General of the Selection Board of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation and the former Chairman of Supervisory Panel of State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, Professor Duan Ruichun; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Mrs Fanny Law; Legislative Council members Mr Wong Ting-kwong, Mr Charles Peter Mok and Dr Lo Wai-kwok; the Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology), Miss Susie Ho; the former Chairman of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Mr Nicholas Brooke; the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, Dr Rosanna Wong; the Chairman of the General Support Programme Vetting Committee under the Innovation and Technology Fund, Mr Stanley Lau; the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, Mr Chua Hoi-wai; the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Miss Janet Wong; and the Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Mr Allen Ma.
