The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, today (October 31) held a meeting with representatives of the Department of Health and the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department to review dengue fever prevention and control measures and discuss ways to strengthen anti-mosquito work to better safeguard public health.

Dr Ko was briefed by the two departments on the progress of the latest anti-mosquito work and enhanced surveillance on dengue fever.

Noting that there had been an upsurge in dengue fever cases in Guangdong Province and the dengue fever activity has remained high in Taiwan and Southeast Asia since September, Dr Ko said dengue fever continues to pose a threat to Hong Kong.

"As Hong Kong also recorded a local dengue fever case last week, the Government has adopted a series of mosquito prevention and control measures to minimise the risk of outbreak of the disease in Hong Kong," he said.

He stressed that the Government as well as the public should not let their guard down.

Dr Ko reminded the public to eliminate pockets of stagnant water that serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes.

"Whether in Hong Kong or travelling abroad, members of the public should be careful and take necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites and prevent mosquito-borne diseases," he added.
