The following is issued on behalf of the Council for Sustainable Development:

Six projects, including initiatives for encouraging active participation in waste reduction, reuse and recycling, building a sustainable community and promoting sustainable practices and energy-saving behaviour have been approved for funding under the Sustainable Development Fund to promote public awareness and the principles of sustainable development, the Chair of the Education and Publicity Sub-committee under the Council for Sustainable Development, Mrs Miranda Leung, said today (October 31).

The six approved projects show a clear integration of the key sustainable development elements, including community and stakeholder engagement as well as other aspects related to environmental awareness and corporate social responsibility, and will last from 12 to 24 months involving a total amount of some $8.2 million to be granted by the Fund. This is the 11th round of applications, with a total of 70 proposals received.

     The six approved projects are:

* "Tin Shui Wai Sustainable Development Community Academy" by Hong Kong Women Development Association Limited for a period of 24 months with a grant of $1,376,650.

* "Use Less Love More - Kowloon City Promoting Sustainable Development Project" by SKH Holy Carpenter Church Community Centre for a period of 24 months with a grant of $1,164,369.

* "'Save for More, Love to All' Sustainable Social Development and Care Project" by Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Lady MacLehose Centre for a period of 24 months with a grant of $1,339,148.

Details of the above projects, as well as projects previously funded by the scheme, can be accessed on www.enb.gov.hk.

"We believe that these projects will become models for wider dissemination of the sustainable development message and for creating a greater positive impact on various sectors of the community. They will also help to sustain the momentum of efforts by various stakeholders and non-government organisations in promoting sustainable development," Mrs Leung said.

The $100 million Fund was set up by the Government in 2003 to support community initiatives promoting the concept of sustainable development. Including this round of application, a cumulative total of 63 projects have been approved for grants from the Fund, involving a total amount of some $63.9 million. The Fund is expected to be open for the next round of applications in the first half year of 2015. Applications from interested organisations and stakeholders as well as individuals are welcome.
