Regarding a statement issued by the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (HKPC&SAPD) today (October 27) commenting on the Chief Executive's remarks about the sports sector at an earlier media session, the Chief Executive's Office responds as follows:
"All along, the Chief Executive has placed great importance to sports development in Hong Kong as well as the contributions by the sports sector, including physically disabled athletes, relevant associations and working staff. He has actively participated in sports related events, including flag presentation ceremonies and welcome home receptions for the Hong Kong delegation before and after they attended international sports events so as to boost their morale and show appreciation for their efforts and contributions.
When speaking at a media session after the Welcome Home Ceremony for the Hong Kong, China Delegation to the Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games a few days ago, the Chief Executive aimed to explain the design of the election system in Hong Kong by pointing out that both the past Election Committee and the future Nominating Committee have to achieve balanced representation as required by the Basic Law so as to reflect the social functions of different sectors in the society. The allocation of seats in the committee is not determined by population or economy value.
The Chief Executive has fully supported sports development in Hong Kong. Upon his assumption of office, he made the decision to build the sports complex at a construction cost of over HK$20 billion. This has demonstrated the current-term government's commitment and determination in sports development. The SAR Government will continue to actively promote sports in Hong Kong in three directions: sports for the whole community, cultivating elite athletes and making Hong Kong the place for major sports events."
