Organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and with the Hong Kong Library Association and the Joint University Librarians Advisory Committee as the co-organisers, the 10th Conference on Cooperative Development and Sharing of Chinese Resources (CCDSCR), which is being held for two consecutive days, began today (October 21) at the Lecture Theatre on the ground floor of the Hong Kong Central Library.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, said that the theme for this year is "Digital Legacy - The Past and the Future of the CCDSCR Projects". The conference will discuss digital strategy, building of digital collections and resources sharing projects. With remarkable advances of information technology in this rapidly developing digital age, constructing and sharing of digital Chinese resources is a common goal for the library sector.

In addition, Mr Tsang; the Director of the National Library of China, Dr Han Yongjin; and the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li also officiated at the launching ceremony of the designated website for Digital Resources of Ancient Chinese Books from the National Library of China. The collaboration project between the LCSD and the National Library of China (NLC) was signed in 2013, under which the NLC will provide various digitised materials of its collections for Hong Kong people's free access in phases through the Multimedia Information System of the HKPL. These include rare ancient books, local gazetteers and rubbings of ancient bronze and stone carvings, as well as new year pictures. Collaborative items in the first phase, including the designated website on some 23 000 digital rubbing images, were launched today. For details, please visit the website at www.hkpl.gov.hk/nlc .

To tie in with the conference, the HKPL also joined hands with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music to host the "Touring Exhibition of Huang Tzu's Rare Manuscripts - Commemorating the 110th Anniversary of His Birth" to showcase the results of the Collaborative Project on Chinese Music Documents. In addition, a subject talk entitled "The Art Songs of Huang Tzu" will be conducted.

The CCDSCR, which was first held in 2000, aims to connect all libraries or information institutions worldwide that hold Chinese documents and to enhance co-operation and resources sharing among these organisations. In the past, conferences had been held in the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau with participants from various countries and regions all over the world. Fourteen co-operative projects have been established since the first conference, involving different aspects including catalogues of ancient books, rubbings, genealogy and Chinese name authority. An exhibition entitled "The Origin of the CCDSCR and a Review of its Cooperative Items" is showcasing relevant items at the Exhibition Area on the ground floor of the Hong Kong Central Library during the 10th CCDSCR.
