Contractors fined for violation of safety rules

     China Harbour Engineering Company Limited and Effective Repair Construction Company Limited were fined $489,000 and $60,000 respectively at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts today (October 20) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Suspended Working Platforms) Regulation, the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Safety Management) Regulation, the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations and the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Lifting Appliances and Lifting Gear) Regulations. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on October 25, 2012, at a site for the construction of an artificial island near Tung Chung. While repairing the sheet piles fitted to a guide frame of a seawall cellular structure, a working platform suspended inside the guide frame suddenly collapsed, resulting in the death of one worker and injuries to 14 workers.
