The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Housing Authority:

The Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) launched the Moon Cake Box Recycling 2014 campaign this year with encouraging results.

The HA set up over 170 collection points for moon cake boxes at the HA Headquarters at Fat Kwong Street, Kowloon; the HA Customer Service Centre in Lok Fu, Kowloon; public rental housing (PRH) estate offices; shopping centres and markets throughout Hong Kong. As a result, more than 54 000 moon cake boxes weighing about 16 tonnes were collected.

"Thanks to the efforts of public housing tenants and our staff, the recycling activities were successfully launched, which reflected their strong support and determination on environmental protection and recycling of domestic waste," said a spokesman for the HA today (October 18).

"Environmental protection is more than just the collection of moon cake boxes. Residents may participate in various activities on waste reduction, recycling and reuse organised by the HA. A waste-reduction lifestyle is encouraged in the daily ways of life, and whether residents are at home or when they go shopping or dining out, waste reduction is to be put into practice."

The Moon Cake Boxes Recycling 2014 campaign was part of the "Let's Join Hands to Reduce Waste in Our Estates" campaign launched by the HA this July, joining a stream of activities including the Awards for the Best Performed PRH Estate and the Best Block in Waste Reduction for the year. PRH residents are encouraged to take part in these activities to help alleviate the heavy burden arising from municipal solid waste in Hong Kong.
