Award-winning erhu virtuoso Yan Guowei to perform with Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra (with photos)

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra will perform a concert in November. Young erhu virtuoso and gold award-winner Yan Guowei will join the performance.

     The programme will include the erhu solos "Reflections of the Moon on the Waters" and "The Legend of Marquis Yi of Zeng" (Hong Kong premiere); the erhu concertos "A Heroine and a Martyr" and "Erhu Rhapsody No. 4" (Hong Kong Premiere); and the orchestral pieces "A Trip to the Ancient Tea Horse Road", "Soaring Song" and "Song of Lishan".

     Yan Guowei has won gold awards at many major erhu competitions in China and overseas. She won the Gold Award in the 9th Erhu Competition at the Chinese Golden Bell Awards for Music in 2013; the Gold Award for Bowed Strings at the 2012 CCTV Ethnic Instrumental Music Competition - Professional Section; the Top Prize for Performance - Youth Erhu Section at the Wenhua Arts Institutes Awards; and First Prize in Erhu at the 2011 Taipei Chinese Instrumental Competition. Yan has performed with many ensembles including the China Philharmonic Orchestra, China Youth Chinese Orchestra, Traditional Music Troupe of Jiangsu, and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. Yan released her first solo album on erhu when she was 19.

     The Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra was founded in 1979. In addition to giving regular concerts in Hong Kong, the orchestra has performed in Macau, Taiwan, Sichuan and Zhejiang in the Mainland, Singapore, Malaysia, the United States and Australia. It also participated in concerts organised by the LCSD for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the Hong Kong 2009 East Asia Games. The orchestra has released many recordings on cassette and CD, including the Golden Disc Award-winning "Fishermen's Song of the East Sea".

     Principal conductor Ho Man-chuen is an acclaimed music educator and conductor. Ho is currently an instructor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and is the resident conductor of its Chinese Orchestra. He is also the Artistic Director of the Windpipe Chinese Ensemble and Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra.

     Conductor Wai Sing-fat has conducted many orchestras and founded the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra in 1979 with a group of young musicians. Wai also conducted the orchestra on a CD recording produced that won a Golden Disc Award in 1992. Wai also served as conductor and chairman of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra at the 1997 Reunification Music Festival.

     The concert by Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra will be staged at 8pm on November 29 (Saturday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Tickets priced from $100 to $140 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis).
