Music critic Chow Fan-fu to give music appreciation lectures on Mahler symphonies

     Acclaimed music critic Chow Fan-fu will hold four music appreciation lectures titled "Great Masters and Their Timeless Masterpieces - Mahler and His Symphonies" in November and December.

     Chow will introduce the audience to Mahler's symphonic world by focusing on two of the composer's best known works - "Symphony No. 1" and "Symphony No.5". The lectures will be conducted in Cantonese and will start at 7.30pm at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum. Details are as follows:

November 26 (Wednesday)

December 3 (Wednesday)
"Symphony No. 1, Movements 3 and 4"

December 10 (Wednesday)
"Symphony No. 5, Movements 1 and 2"

     Chow has hosted a variety of classical music and cultural programmes on Radio Television Hong Kong's Radio 4 since 1982. He is currently Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Chapter of the International Association of Theatre Critics and an examiner for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In 2011, he was awarded a Medal of Honour by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government for his continued and tireless efforts in the promotion of classical music and appreciation of the arts. Publications authored by him include "Music Is Life", which was nominated for "Ten Best Books of 2006" and "Music with Love: The 30th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra", which was listed as one of the "Ten Best Books of 2005".

     "Music Appreciation Series: Great Masters and Their Timeless Masterpieces - Mahler and His Symphonies" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $50 per lecture are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for group booking packages.
