Renowned Spanish flamenco dance company to return with "Carmen" (with photos)
*******************************************************

The world-renowned Antonio Gades Company from Spain will return to Hong Kong to stage three flamenco performances of "Carmen" in January, 2015.

The much awaited performances will take place at 8.15pm on January 2 and 3, 2015 (Friday and Saturday) and 3pm on January 4, 2015 (Sunday) at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Inspired by Prosper Merimée's novella, this version of "Carmen" is based on the original choreography by the late Antonio Gades. Its premiere in Paris in 1983 was a considerable popular and critical success, revealing him as not just one of the most important dancers in the world but also one of the greatest choreographers. It came to be regarded as Gades' masterpiece.

Only months before he passed away, Gades set up a foundation to look after his artistic heritage and promote his works, aiming to promote Spanish dance around the world. At the request of the foundation, the disbanded Antonio Gades Company is now back on stage and solely responsible for staging Gades' works, keeping the original spirit and guidelines his works were devised with intact.

Under the artistic direction of Stella Arauzo and technical direction of Dominique You, the dance company's new formation continues to follow Gades' style, expressing the most profound human concerns within an aesthetically refined language rooted in the traditions and culture of the Spanish people.

"Carmen" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $180, $280, $400 and $520 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the group booking packages.
