Correctional officers prevent person in custody from hanging himself
************************************************************

Correctional officers stopped a male person in custody from hanging himself in Shek Pik Prison this morning (September 28).

At 4.48am, an on-duty officer found the 23-year-old person in custody hanging himself with a piece of bed sheet and his jacket tied to the grill gate inside the cell. The officer immediately supported his body and called for reinforcement.

The person in custody was released upon arrival of the reinforcement staff. He was unconscious at the time and later regained his consciousness after receiving first-aid services. He was transferred to a public hospital for further examination and treatment. A clinical psychologist will follow up on the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was sentenced for the offence of non-consensual buggery.
