SHA: Government committed to promoting development of sports (with photos)

     The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, today (September 27) said the Government is committed to promoting the development of elite sports in Hong Kong. He made the comments while attending the closing ceremony of the 2014 Wong Tai Sin Sports Festival cum the 4th Sports without Boundaries Fun Day to show his support for community recreation and sports programmes.

     Mr Tsang said, "In the past dozen years, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has been devoting resources to developing sports pathways and a comprehensive system with an aim of cultivating elite athletes and encouraging wider community participation in sports activities."

     He added, "Hong Kong athletes have excelled in the current Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, with Lee Wai-sze, Lok Kwan-hoi and Shek Wai-hung from grassroots families winning gold medals. Their experiences in turning the ordinary into the extraordinary should be cited as excellent examples for young people grasping opportunities and seeking achievements in sports."

     A number of competitions and fun days have been held during the 2014 Wong Tai Sin Sports Festival, which is being held by the Wong Tai Sin District Recreation and Sports Council from September 7 to 27 to promote sports for all with a view to nurturing a healthy and vibrant community.

     The 4th Sports without Boundaries Fun Day was held after the closing ceremony. The programme included competitions without boundaries with the participation of people from ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities to promote social harmony.
