HK Film Archive to screen "Colourful Youth" in celebration of UNESCO's World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (with photo)
***********************************************************

Audiovisual materials such as moving images, films and audio records play an important part in cultural heritage, yet the conservation efforts for these valuable items are often neglected. The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization has designated October 27 of every year as World Day for Audiovisual Heritage since 2005 to raise public awareness in conserving audiovisual documents as an integral part of national identities.

In support of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) will screen one of its prized titles, "Colourful Youth" (1966), in the "Early Treasures" programme at the Cinema of the HKFA at 7.30pm on October 27 (Monday). Audiences will be able to relish the classic musical film, starring Connie Chan Po-chu and Josephine Siao Fong-fong, on screen once again.

With the print donated by Chi Luen Film Company Limited, digital restoration was carried out at the L'Immagine Ritrovata film restoration laboratory in Italy in 2010. A new 35mm copy was struck after image and sound restoration.

Shot in Eastmancolor, "Colourful Youth" is the only film with a contemporary setting starring both Chan and Siao, unequivocally the most popular teen idols in the history of Cantonese cinema. Also with Woo Fung, Nancy Sit Kar-yin, Wong Oi-ming and Cheng Kwan-min in the cast, the film was a huge hit with phenomenal box office results on its first release and re-releases in the 1960s. Choreographed song-and-dance numbers punctuate the story and are performed by young men and women in the trendiest fashions of the time.

The film is in Cantonese with English and Chinese subtitles.

Tickets priced at $40 are available at URBTIX. Half-price concessionary tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 and above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
