Award scheme promotes inclusive culture at schools (with photos)
*********************************************************

The Award Presentation Ceremony of the "Home-school Cooperation in Building an Inclusive School Culture" Award Scheme, jointly organised by the Education Bureau (EDB) and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), was held today (September 27). More than 100 families or parent teams were commended for their efforts in providing appropriate support for their children with special education needs (SEN) and building an inclusive school culture.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Under Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, said that the EDB attaches great importance to promoting integration education. He expressed the hope that families and schools could work together to create a caring and inclusive learning environment to enable students with SEN to grow up happily and develop their talents.

He also noted that to help schools in taking care of students with SEN, the EDB will continue to provide schools with additional resources, professional support and teacher training. The bureau will optimise the support measures where necessary and feasible.

The Award Scheme aims at promoting an inclusive school culture through the commendation of families which provide appropriate support for their children with SEN, as well as families and parent teams which actively support schools in implementing inclusive policies and practices.

More than 100 nominations for commendation from primary, secondary and special schools were received when the Award Scheme was launched in the 2013/14 school year. Ten outstanding families or parent teams with the most touching stories were selected from each group by a judging panel to receive certificates of merit today. The ceremony also featured sharing and performances by parents and students. Audio and video segments (in Chinese only) on some of the cases have already been uploaded to RTHK's special webpage for the Award Scheme: teenpower1.rthk.hk/teenspecial/homeschool2014/ep01.html .

The Award Scheme was co-organised by the Equal Opportunities Commission, the Subsidised Primary Schools Council, the Union of Government Primary School Headmasters and Headmistresses, the Hong Kong Subsidised Secondary Schools Council, the Association of Principals of Government Secondary Schools, the Hong Kong Special Schools Council and the Committee on Home-School Co-operation.
