Appointment to Standing Committee on Company Law Reform
*******************************************************

The Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang, has appointed Mr John Scott as the new Chairman of the Standing Committee on Company Law Reform (SCCLR) for a term starting from October 1, 2014, to January 31, 2017.

Mr Scott is a senior counsel with broad civil practice experience. He will succeed Mr Anderson Chow Ka-ming, the outgoing Chairman, who has taken up a judicial appointment and stepped down from the chairmanship of the SCCLR.

A government spokesman said, "We look forward to the SCCLR's valuable advice to the Government on matters relating to company law reform under the leadership of Mr Scott. The Committee's advice is essential in making our law commensurate with Hong Kong's status as an international commercial and financial centre."

The spokesman added, "We are grateful to the outgoing Chairman, Mr Chow, for his valuable contributions during his tenure. With his able leadership, Mr Chow has steered the SCCLR in providing insightful advice on the corporate insolvency law as well as the company law reform."

The SCCLR was set up in 1984 to advise the Financial Secretary on amendments to the Companies Ordinance and the Companies (Winding Up and Miscellaneous Provisions) Ordinance, as well as amendments to the Securities and Futures Ordinance on matters relating to corporate governance and shareholders' protection, as and when necessary.

Members of the SCCLR include practitioners from relevant professions including accountancy, legal and company secretarial fields as well as academics, individuals from the business communities and representatives from relevant government departments and financial regulators.
