Cinematic Theatre's new production examines social values and pressures
**********************************************************

Local theatre group Cinematic Theatre will stage its new production "Informer" in November. The story begins with an informant's letter, and a complicated case of incest unfolds with four unsettling monologues.

A philosophy professor and father, who has just lost a promising opportunity for promotion, sets out to grab the one thing that can reassert his authority; a doggedly devoted mother tries at all costs to maintain the peace and stability of the family; a daughter yearning for her parents' love strives to find a way to vent her hurt; and the father's colleague, an outsider, tries to re-construct the tragedy from a philosophical point of view.

"Informer" is the first of a local series of plays to be presented by Cinematic Theatre. The series will focus on facets of our time and place by examining the many conundrums concerning "values" in Hong Kong. The programme combines monologues that provide food for thought alongside subtle imagery in its revelation that incest is taking place within a pent-up middle-class family. The play exposes the frustration and sense of impotence that some Hong Kong people feel today, the rebellious acts of the young and the restless, and the impact that social pressures have on families that struggle to stay together.

"Informer" is written by Pong Shi-kit and directed by Lo Ching-man. The cast includes Andy Ng, Ceci Chan, Ip Ka-yan and Law Chung-kin.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), "Informer" (to be performed in Cantonese) will be staged at 8pm on November 14 and 15 (Friday and Saturday) and at 3pm on November 15 and 16 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Multi-media Theatre of the HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity.
