The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance today (September 19) alerted the public to a fraudulent website with the website address "http://starr-ins.com". The website purports to be the official website of two authorised insurers in Hong Kong, Starr International Insurance (Asia) Limited (Starr) and Tugu Insurance Company Limited (Tugu). Starr and Tugu have confirmed that they have no connection with the fraudulent website.
The case has been reported to the Hong Kong Police Force for further investigation. Anyone who has provided personal information to the website or has conducted any insurance transactions through the website should contact Starr at 3765 5333, Tugu at 2824 6828, the Police at 3661 1612 or any local police station.
Any company carrying on insurance business in or from Hong Kong must be authorised by the Insurance Authority under the Insurance Companies Ordinance (Cap. 41). The full list of authorised insurers in Hong Kong can be found at www.oci.gov.hk/download/ins.pdf.
