LegCo delegation continues its visit to Parliament of Norway (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The delegation of the Legislative Council (LegCo) continued its visit in Norway yesterday (September 18) and attended meetings with Members of the Storting, the Parliament of Norway, to gain first-hand information on various parliamentary affairs.

     In the morning, delegation members visited the Storting and received a briefing on the Legislature and the historical background of the Parliament building by a representative of the Storting Secretariat. During the meeting, delegation members also learnt about the Norwegian political history.

     The delegation also attended a joint meeting with members of the Standing Committee on Local Government and Public Administration and the Standing Committee on Scrutiny and Constitutional Affairs of the Storting. A wide range of subjects were discussed, covering the powers and functions of the two committees, formation of coalition government and family-friendly policies.

     After the meeting, the delegation met with the President of the Storting, Mr Olemic Thommessen, to learn about the rules of procedures of the Storting, including sitting quorum and time allocated for questions and debates.

     Before its departure for Denmark in the evening, the delegation visited the University of Oslo to meet with Professor Eivind Smith, renowned academic of constitutional and administrative law in Norway.  Professor Smith briefed the delegation on the political landscape, constitution and electoral system of Norway.

     The delegation will begin its visit in Denmark today (September 19) and will meet with representatives of the Parliament of Denmark.
