Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Ronald Chin's Percussion Concert will be staged in October, featuring his new work for percussion ensembles, "Xiang-Ren-He" (or "Percussions in Harmony").

"Xiang-Ren-He" was written by Chin as a tribute to the master traditional drum maker Wang Xijun, who also manages the Xiang Ren He Drum Factory. The percussion piece is a mixture of "resounding", "benevolent" and "harmony". Themed under "Xiang-Ren-He", the concert introduces the audience to the traditions of percussion music.

Also included in the programme are the jiangu solo "Loess Plateau Stories", the drum duet "The Bull Fighting the Tiger", the Jiangzhou drum music "Rolling Walnuts", the mixed percussion solo "Flying Stars" (premiere) and more. Also performing in the concert are percussionist Liao Yi-ping from Taipei and the Hong Kong Drum Ensemble.

Ronald Chin is a well-known percussionist in Hong Kong and a virtuoso of many types of Chinese and Western percussion instruments. He has represented Hong Kong on various performance tours and academic exchanges around the world. In 1996, he was invited by the Percussive Arts Society to give a solo performance, for which received critical acclaim. Since 2000, Chin's name has been included in the "Outstanding Musicians of the 20th Century" published by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge University. In 2007, he was invited by the Vanderbilt University in Texas to give a performance and talk on percussion music at the Blair School of Music. His album, "Prince of Qin Takes His Roll Call", released under the HUGO label in 2013, was chosen for the 2013 Hi-Fi Album Award in Guangdong Province for Percussion Album of the Year. He is currently Assistant Percussion Principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He plays an active curatorial role in gala events in Hong Kong, and has participated at the International Chinese New Year Night Parade, the Hong Kong Sevens and the 10th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region among others. In 1998, he founded the Hong Kong Drum Ensemble to actively promote Chinese drum music and participate in community and charity events.

Liao Yi-Ping was born in Taipei and received training in Chinese traditional theatre at a young age, and is well versed in both Chinese and Western percussion techniques. She trained in Chinese percussion under Li Hui, Shao Shu-fen, Lai Hsuan and Yim Hok-man, and in Western percussion under Wang Hsiao-yin. At the 2009 "Music About China" concert in Hong Kong, she performed Guo Wenjing's "Drama", winning the praise of the composer and colleagues. In the same year, she performed "Bangu Music with Ornamentations", "Blues for GilbertĄ¨ and "Eight Sounds in Harmony" at the concert "Three in Concert". In 2010, she went with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra Percussion Ensemble to Beijing to participate in the first International Percussion Festival held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. Liao's mixed percussion solo "Eight Sounds in Harmony" was chosen for inclusion in the 2011 Hong Kong High-End Audio Visual Show album and won professional acclaim.
