The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, today (September 17) congratulated Dr Agachai Sumalee, Associate Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, on winning the 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education (ASPIRE).
"The award recognises Dr Sumalee's excellence in research in the areas of intelligent transportation systems, transport modelling and transport planning, and his close co-operation with scientists from other APEC member economies," Mr So said.
The Innovation and Technology Commission invited nominations from eight institutions funded by the University Grants Committee in March this year and eventually nominated Dr Sumalee for the award. Dr Sumalee was then selected among nine nominees by the APEC Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation member economies as this year's winner. The result was announced today.
The annual ASPIRE recognises young scientists (aged below 40) who have demonstrated a commitment to both excellence in scientific research, as shown by scholarly publications, and co-operation with scientists from other APEC economies. The theme this year was intelligent transportation.
