SED saddened by passing of Dr Marvin Cheung

     The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (September 13) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr Marvin Cheung, Chairman of the Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and extended his deepest condolences to Dr Cheung's family.

     "Dr Cheung was devoted to public service and had in particular rendered significant contributions to the education sector.  He was an experienced member of the HKUST Council, and had been its Chairman since 2008. Under Dr Cheung's sterling leadership, the HKUST had firmly established itself as one of the world's top-tiered universities that pursues excellence, inspires innovation, embraces a global outlook and promotes the whole person development of its students. His passing is a great loss to the higher education sector," Mr Ng said.

     Dr Cheung also contributed tremendously to education in Hong Kong in other capacities.  He had been a member of the Council of the Open University of Hong Kong and was the Honorary Treasurer of the Council of St Paul's Co-educational College. He was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 1991 and was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2008.
