The Government today (September 12) announced some appointments and re-appointments to the Insurance Advisory Committee.
The Financial Secretary, in exercise of the authority delegated by the Chief Executive, has appointed four new members and re-appointed nine incumbent members to the Committee for a term of two years from October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2016.
The four new members are Mr Garth Brian Jones, Professor Angela Ng Lai-ping, Ms Winnie Wong Chi-shun and Mr Lennard Yong Peng-kuang.
The Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Professor K C Chan, said, "Members of the Committee are drawn from different walks of the community, in particular the insurance industry, banking, legal and academic fields. Their diverse backgrounds will provide us with valuable advice on various matters pertaining to the development of the insurance industry in the coming years, including the establishment of the independent Insurance Authority, the most important regulatory reform for the industry in the past 30 years."
Professor Chan also paid tribute to outgoing members of the Committee, namely Mr Michael Edward Huddart, Mrs Agnes Koon Woo Kam-oi and Ms Amanda Liu Lai-yun, expressing his gratitude for their dedication and support to the Committee.
The Insurance Advisory Committee is a statutory committee established under the Insurance Companies Ordinance. Its function, as stated in section 54(1) of the Ordinance, is to advise the Chief Executive on such matters relating to the administration of the Ordinance or the carrying on of insurance business as the Chief Executive may refer to the Committee or as the Committee may consider to be in the interests of the insurance industry in Hong Kong.
The Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, as the representative of the Financial Secretary, is the ex-officio Chairman of the Committee by virtue of section 54(3) of the Ordinance. The Commissioner of Insurance, in her capacity as the Insurance Authority, is the ex-officio member.
