**********************************************************

The Director-General of Civil Aviation, Mr Norman Lo, chaired the 25th meeting of the Asia Pacific Air Navigation Planning and Implementation Regional Group (APANPIRG) from September 8 to 11 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

APANPIRG has been established as the regional steering body to ensure the effective implementation of the International Civil Aviation Organization's Air Navigation Plan in the Asia-Pacific region. This year, more than 120 representatives from 23 states, two Special Administrative Regions of China and four international aviation organisations attended this annual high-level regional meeting.

Under the leadership of Mr Lo, APANPIRG continued to make remarkable progress in various regional air navigation areas, especially in the key items which it agreed to pursue. The meeting had taken another step forward in the pursuance of Seamless Air Traffic Management (ATM) in the region. The group determined to implement 10 priority elements in the Asia/Pacific Seamless ATM Plan with targets set through which regularity, efficiency and safety of regional air navigation services could be enhanced.

Taken into consideration the migration towards information-based ATM operations, states/administrations had also committed to enhancing surveillance and data communication infrastructure to pave way for more advanced ATM applications.

As the air traffic volume in the Asia-Pacific region is forecast to maintain its robust growth in the coming 15 to 20 years, Mr Lo urged all member states/administrations to further collaborate and enhance air navigation infrastructure to meet future demand.

Mr Lo also attended the first coordination meeting with the Regional Aviation Safety Group with all APANPIRG Sub-Group Chairmen to enhance harmonisation of common regional work programmes.
