The following is issued on behalf of the Committee on Respect Our Teachers Campaign:

More than 1,200 teachers were presented with commendation certificates by the Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, and other officiating guests at the "Salute to Teachers 2014 - Teachers' Day and Commendation Certificate Presentation Ceremony" organised by the Committee on Respect Our Teachers Campaign (CROTC) today (September 10).

Under the Teachers' Commendation Scheme organised by CROTC to foster a culture of respect for teachers, kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools may each nominate two teachers who have shown commitment and excellence in teaching. The scheme is in its 19th year, with over 23,000 teachers commended to date.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ng paid tribute to teachers for their hard work and ceaseless devotion in nurturing the students. Teachers' untiring efforts and cultivation is pivotal to the continuous remarkable performance of Hong Kong's students, which signifies that Hong Kong's education is developing in the right direction, said Mr Ng. He added that the Government will adopt suitable support measures to enable teachers to give full play to their professional expertise.

Also addressing the ceremony, the CROTC Chairman, Ms Lee Suet-ying, said that although the ceremony itself must end, she believed teachers' devotion to teaching, their dedication to fostering the next generation, and their determination in enhancing the quality of education in Hong Kong will continue after the ceremony.

Other officiating guests at the ceremony included the Permanent Secretary for Education, Mrs Cherry Tse; the Chairman of the Education Commission, Dr Moses Cheng; and the Chairperson of the Curriculum Development Council, Professor Kenneth Young.
