SEN attends APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting (with photos)

     The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, participated in the plenary session of the 11th Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Energy Ministerial Meeting (EMM) in Beijing today (September 2).

     Mr Wong joined ministers responsible for energy from the other 20 members of APEC to discuss collaboration on the sustainable development of energy, covering energy security, energy trade and investment, energy efficiency and sustainable communities, as well as the promotion and use of cleaner sources of energy.

     Mr Wong delivered a speech during the plenary session titled "Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Community". He told delegates that Hong Kong has laid a good foundation on energy saving, and that a wide range of policies and measures have been introduced to manage demand for energy consumption of new buildings and existing buildings through legislation and incentives, Government leadership, public education and social mobilisation.

     "Hong Kong's next step is to further promote energy efficiency and a sustainable community. And the plenary session provides a valuable forum for exchanges of views," Mr Wong said.

      He also took the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings with  the Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority, Singapore, Mr Chee Hong Tat, and the Deputy Secretary of Energy, the United States Department of Energy, Mr Daniel B Poneman, to exchange views on environment-related issues.

     Mr Wong will call on officials of the National Energy Administration, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to discuss issues of mutual concern tomorrow (September 3).
