***********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education:

The "Exhibition Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Victory in the War of Resistance against Japan" is being held from today (September 1) until December 31 at the Civic Education Resource Centre in the Youth Square in Chai Wan. The exhibition has been jointly organised by the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education (CPCE), the Home Affairs Bureau, the Hong Kong Organizing Committee for the Activities Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Victory in the War of Resistance against Japan and the Hong Kong Culture Association.

Officiating at the opening ceremony of the exhibition this afternoon were the Convenor of the National Education Subcommittee under the CPCE, Mr Ho Siu-ping; the Principal Assistant Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Vincent Fung; the Secretary General of the Hong Kong Organizing Committee for the Activities Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Victory in the War of Resistance against Japan, Mr Lung Chee-ming; and the Convenor of the Executive Committee of the Hong Kong Culture Association, Dr Lee Kok-keung.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ho said that this year marks the 65th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 17th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, and that September 3 and December 13 are designated as the Victory Day of the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression and Nanjing Massacre Memorial Day respectively. To commemorate the Victory Day of the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression, the co-organisers are holding the four-month exhibition at the Civic Education Resource Centre from today to enable more people to learn about the war.

Mr Ho said that the Chinese people have confronted difficulties over the past 100 years, resulting in impressive lessons and inspiration. He noted that it is important for all Chinese people, and especially the younger generation, to have an in-depth understanding of history. They should learn from history and continue their efforts in the development of our country and Hong Kong, he said.

A series of panels, photos, valuable exhibits and videos are being shown in the exhibition to enhance visitors' understanding of Chinese history from the First Sino-Japanese War to the victory in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression. During the exhibition, a documentary video about the war of resistance against Japan, produced by the Education Bureau and Radio Television Hong Kong, is showing important historical incidents. It shares a message that lessons learnt from the past can guide people in the future, and thus encourages the Chinese people to remember history and make efforts to forge ahead. The Civic Education Resource Centre will arrange guided tours for visiting groups. The public are welcome to make appointments.

The Civic Education Resource Centre is located at 7/F, Youth Square, 238 Chai Wan Road, Chai Wan. For details of the exhibition, please visit the Civic Education Resource Centre's website (www.cpce.gov.hk/resource_centre/tc/index.htm).
