Space Museum's latest Omnimax film to show bizarre realm all around us (with photos)
************************************************************

The Hong Kong Space Museum's latest Omnimax show, "Mysteries of the Unseen World", to be screened from tomorrow (September 1) until February 28 next year, makes use of technology to help viewers break through the limitations of sensory organs and see a bizarre realm that is so near and yet so unfamiliar.

Our vision begins when light waves bounce off an object and enter the eyes. They focus on our retina to form an image, which is then turned into electrical impulses that race to the brain. But when it comes to actions that are too quick or too slow to follow, objects that are too small to be seen without assistance and wavelengths that are beyond visible light, our eyes, which are said to be our windows to the world, are in fact quite helpless.

In "Mysteries of the Unseen World", scientists make use of advanced technologies such as thermal imaging cameras, high-speed cameras, time-lapse photography and electron microscopes to reveal the hidden world around us. Among the many sights revealed are the infrared vision of a mosquito, a bullet in flight, the growth of a plant and the super-tiny structures on a butterfly's wing. These precious images are more than just eye-openers; by exploring such an incredible realm, we can learn from nature in creating new exotic materials, such as water-repelling nano-coating and ultra-stiff graphene, and in devising life-changing inventions.

As audiences view the stunning images in the show, they will find a brand new experience of the world we live in and discover where technology is headed.

The 40-minute show will be screened daily at 1.30pm, 5pm and 8.30pm at the museum's Stanley Ho Space Theatre. The museum is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays).

Tickets are available at the Hong Kong Space Museum Box Office and at URBTIX for $24 (front stalls) and $32 (stalls). Full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 or above and people with disabilities are eligible for a half-price concession.
