Territory-wide campaign to promote safe driving
***********************************************

Police yesterday (August 19) have concluded a territory-wide campaign to remind drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles of the importance of safe driving.

This was the latest in an ongoing series of campaigns conducted by the Police using publicity, education and enforcement to target moving traffic offences.

Conducted between August 13 and 19, the campaign resulted in the issue of 30 verbal warnings, 128 summonses, 2 623 fixed penalty tickets and the arrest of four drivers for drink driving offences.

Among the 2 751 summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 892 were issued for speeding, 320 for mobile phone offences, 165 for seatbelt offence and 151 for failing to comply with traffic light signals.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited 256 locations throughout the territory and distributed about 9 000 leaflets to drivers of public service vehicles, goods vehicles and members of the public.

Members of the public are encouraged to report undesirable driving behaviour to the Police. Passengers are encouraged to report improper driving behaviour of public light bus drivers to the Project Safe-Ride hotline 2754 7668.
