The theme of the Youth Summit 2014 is "Opportunities and Future in the Eyes of Youth". To enhance youth participation, an online exercise to collect views was conducted between July 21 and August 10 for young people to choose three out of 10 topics for in-depth discussions at the summit.

The exercise gained support from 450 young people and 1,265 selections of discussion topics were recorded. Other possible topics for selection were "Opportunities and Future in the Eyes of Youth in a Globalised Economy", "Opportunities and Future in the Eyes of Youth with the Rapid Development of Information Technology", "Opportunities and Future in the Eyes of Youth with the Challenges of a Knowledge-based Society", "Opportunities and Future in the Eyes of Youth in the Development of Cultural and Creative Industries", "Opportunities and Future in the Eyes of Youth with the Growing Global Cultural Exchange", "Opportunities and Future in the Eyes of Youth with the Struggle between Environmental Protection and Economic Development" and "Opportunities and Future in the Eyes of Youth with the Transition from School to Work".
