HK Customs foils suspected attempted smuggling of dried seahorses (with photo)

     Hong Kong Customs today (August 5) seized about 67 kilograms of dried seahorses from a 40-foot container arriving from Mozambique. The total value of the seizure was about $130,000. The case has been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.

     Hong Kong Customs is committed to combating the smuggling of endangered wildlife, and will continue to take vigorous enforcement action against such smuggling activities.

     Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, any person found guilty of trading endangered species for commercial purposes is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and imprisonment for two years.
