Customs detects suspected smuggling of electronic gadgets (with photos)

     Hong Kong Customs mounted an anti-smuggling operation at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday (August 1) and detected suspected smuggling of more than 3 400 electronic gadgets, valued at about $5 million, including smart phones, tablet computers, digital single lens reflex cameras, digital cameras, lens, digital camcorders and computer accessories from an outgoing truck.

     Customs officers intercepted the truck at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday afternoon. According to the manifest submitted by the driver, the truck was allegedly carrying 201 cartons of "Capacitive Touch Panel and Flexible Printed Circuit". Upon thorough examination,  more than 3 400 unmanifested electronic gadgets of various types placed in another 17 cartons were found being mingled with the declared cargoes. The suspected male driver, aged 41, was arrested for attempting to export unmanifested cargoes. Investigation is continuing.

     Smuggling is a serious offence under the Import and Export Ordinance. The maximum penalty is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
