A kind of milk found imported from unapproved source of manufacture
********************************************************

A kind of milk, Safa Milk, imported from a source of manufacture not approved by the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, has been found in local market, a spokesman for the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said today (August 1).

As the source of manufacture has not been approved by the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, the food safety of the product is in question. The CFS calls on the public not to buy the product concerned for consumption if it is found on sale in retail outlets. The trade should also stop selling the product as it may violate the law.

"Following up a complaint, the CFS found that the milk product concerned in paper pack (1 litre) was placed on the shelf in a grocery store at Wang Fat Path in Yuen Long. Source tracing of the product concerned is in progress and the trade will be alerted of the incident. The CFS will consider taking out prosecution action based on the investigation result," the spokesman said.

The Milk Regulation (Cap. 132, sub. leg. AQ) requires that no person shall sell or advertise for sale, any milk or milk beverage imported into Hong Kong from a source of manufacture other than a source of manufacture which has been approved by the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene. The maximum penalty for failing to do so is a fine of $10,000 and imprisonment for three months.

"The CFS will continue to follow-up on the case and take appropriate actions as and when necessary," the spokesman said.
