Yangqin Recital by Kwok Ka-ying, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and one of the attractions of the "Our Music Talents" Series, will be staged in September.
Young local yangqin virtuoso Kwok Ka-ying will perform solo in "Hanging the Blind Upside Down", "Thoughts Over the Clouds", "Spring in Honghe" and more. She will also perform in the ensemble works "Fantasy" with strings, "Girl from Kroran" with piano and "Overture 1949" with both piano and strings, which will be making their premieres in Hong Kong.
Kwok Ka-ying was the first postgraduate to be awarded a master's degree in yangqin from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She is currently an instructor in yangqin at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts - Chinese Opera and its Junior Music Programme, a freelance musician of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, a resident musician of the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, a member of the Cimbalom World Association and the Founder and President of the Hong Kong Dulcimer Institute.
Kwok studied at the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Academy and the middle school affiliated with the Xinghai Conservatory of Music before she was awarded a full scholarship to study at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2005. Her mentors included Hu Ruoxiong, Wang Wenli, Chan Sam-lam, Cheung Yu-chu and Yu Mei-lai.
Kwok has been dedicating herself to teaching and performing yangqin in recent years. She has toured France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Mainland, Macau and Taiwan, and has performed as a soloist with the Academy Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Oriental Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble and more. She participated as a member of the Hong Kong Cantonese Orchestra in the 2012 China Central Television (CCTV) Ethnic Instrumental Music Television Competition - Traditional Folk Ensemble Section and the group won a Silver Award. In 2013, she founded the Hong Kong Dulcimer Institute and was invited to attend the 12th Cimbalom World Association Congress in Taiwan in October to give talks and concerts.
Yangqin Recital by Kwok Ka-ying will be staged at 8pm on September 5 (Friday) at the Theatre of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre. Tickets priced at $160 and $120 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and the minder, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients).
