"Vocal Recital by David Quah (Tenor): Schubert's 'Die Schöne Müllerin'", presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and with the collaboration of pianist Timmy Tsang, will offer an unforgettable night for music lovers this October.
"Die Schöne Müllerin" is a song cycle by Schubert based on poems by Wilhelm Müller. The work is considered one of Schubert's most important cycles and one of the pinnacles of German lieder. German lieder are generally songs that were written from the mid to late 19th century using German poetry in music. Songs with simple melodies accompanied by piano were composed and often used to express the emotions of poets or for narration. The singing style of German lieder is more natural and approachable, completely different from the style used in opera.
Malaysian-born David Quah started his career in Hong Kong in 2000 and started teaching singing at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). He is currently Chairman of Bel Canto Singers. Quah regularly performs in Southeast Asia, including taking the principal role of Steven Lee in the world premiere of "Fences" in Singapore. In Hong Kong, he was cast in the title role of composer Lo Hau-man's chamber opera "The Legend of Zhang Baozai", which premiered at Shanghai Expo 2010. He has given many recitals with repertoire ranging from baroque music to contemporary works, Chinese folk songs and Broadway musical numbers. Quah has also appeared in concerts in countries including Australia, Thailand, France, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Timmy Tsang now works at the HKAPA as Lecturer (Vocal and Academic Studies) and teaches aural training. He is also a voice coach at the Academy. Tsang studied piano performance and accompaniment with Gabriel Kwok at the HKAPA and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Piano Performance) with first class honours and a Professional Diploma (Opera Repetiteur/Accompanist) with distinction. He has been a répétiteur for operas including "Die Zauberflöte", "La Bohème", "Aïda" and "Die Fledermaus". Tsang has also worked with the Academyˇ¦s visiting conductors and musicians, including Sir Neville Marriner, Lazlo Heltay and Georg Tintner.
The concert will be at 8pm on October 3 (Friday) at the Theatre of Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $160 and $120 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis).
To allow audiences to understand more about German lieder, the LCSD will present a "Lecture Demonstration Series on Romanticism & German Lieder" (in Cantonese), to be held in the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum at 7.30pm on September 3, 10, 17 and 24 (Wednesdays). Professor Chan Wing-wah will be the speaker and Quah and Tsang will give demonstrations at the lectures. Tickets are priced at $50; please refer to programme leaflets for details.
