600 glass bottle collection points set up at housing estates (with photos)
************************************************************

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) announced today (July 20) that the number of glass bottle collection points at housing estates had been increased to 600 by the end of June 2014.

A spokesman for the EPD said, "The EPD intends to set up more collection points for glass bottles at housing estates by increasing the number to 1 000 points by the end of this year. The work in this respect has been making good progress and provides a foundation for the future implementation of the Producer Responsibility Scheme on Glass Beverage Bottles."

From April to June 2014, the EPD set up 151 new glass bottle collection points to supplement the 449 existing ones in order to serve a total of 600 housing estates. The estates comprise 57 government quarters, 81 public rental housing estates and 462 private housing estates. More details are available at the following website: www.epd.gov.hk/epd/english/environmentinhk/waste/eco_responsibility/gcrp_pilot_ssp_ha.html .

The spokesman encouraged the public to participate in glass bottle recycling and adopt the "recycle clean" practice. Besides glass beverage bottles, properly cleaned food and sauce bottles will also be accepted for recycling. The waste glass bottles collected from EPD collection points will be delivered to competent recyclers for recycling and production of eco-pavers or use in other public works projects, thereby turning waste glass into a useful resource and helping to alleviate the pressure on landfills.

To facilitate recycling work, the public are reminded not to put into recycling bins any plastic bags carrying glass bottles. Plastic bags should be removed for recycling separately before putting glass bottles into the recycling bins.

The EPD will continue to set up more residential glass bottle collection points. Housing estates interested in participating in glass bottle recycling can contact the EPD at 2838 3111 or by email at enquiry@epd.gov.hk.
