Building Safety Pioneer Programme launched (with photos)
********************************************************

     Organised by the Buildings Department (BD) and co-organised by the Education Bureau, the Building Safety Pioneer Programme (BSPP) has been officially launched. Fifty-nine secondary students from 12 schools will participate in various activities of the one-year programme to better understand the importance of building safety, the responsibilities of building owners and the duties of the BD and building professionals.

    A spokesperson for the BD today (July 20) said the programme is also supported by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors. The target participants of the BSPP are secondary students who have been nominated by their schools to join the programme.

     Participating students are required to:
* pay visits to buildings in old districts to see the results of building rehabilitation;
* visit the BD thematic website's "Care For Your Building" page and play the two online games "Building Pioneers" and "Defect Shooter";
* join workshops organised by the BD and professional building organisations;
* pay visits to workplaces of BD and related professionals (architects, engineers and surveyors);
* form teams on a school basis to take part in the design, production and administration of the game counters/display kiosks which will be set up at the opening ceremony of the BD's Building Safety Week in March next year; and
* organise activities in their schools to promote building safety and submit a school project report at end-June next year.

     Participating schools and students who successfully finish the programme will be awarded with book coupons and certificates. Book coupons and certificates will also be given to winners of "The Best Counter in the Building Safety Week Award" and "The Best School Project Award".

     To help participating students gain a better understanding of the programme, a briefing session cum site visit was held at the BD's Building Information Centre on the 13th floor of Pioneer Centre earlier this month. Appointment letters and badges of the programme were handed to the participating students. They also had the opportunity to use the Building Records Access and Viewing On-line (BRAVO) system and building inspection equipment.

     Meanwhile, all Hong Kong secondary school students are invited to visit the BD thematic website's "Care For Your Building" page and play the two online games "Building Pioneers" and "Defect Shooter" from June 30, 2014 to February 28, 2015.

     The school with the maximum number of students finishing the two online games will win the "Most Supportive School Award". Book coupons and certificates will be awarded to the winning school, while certificates will be issued to its students who have played the games.
