The Eastern District Office held "The E-League" programme launch ceremony cum seminar today (July 19) at Quarry Bay Community Hall, raising the curtain on a series of support events for youth development. Around 100 people attended the event, including principals and teachers from the district as well as 22 secondary school students selected by a panel for the programme among nominees from district schools.

Officiating at the launch ceremony were the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing; the Deputy Consul-General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong, Mr Lee Heon; the District Officer (Eastern), Ms Anne Teng; the Principal of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Chai Wan), Mr Roger Lee; the Chairman of Eastern District School Liaison Committee, Mr Lo Sai-kwong; the Chairman of Community Building and Services Committee under the Eastern District Council, Mr Hung Lin-cham; and the Chairman of Eastern District Youth Programme Committee, Mr Lee Tak-kuen.

At the officiating ceremony, Mr Tsang said that the HKSAR Government is devoted to nurturing young people, being the next generation of Hong Kong, through education, employment and whole person development. Regarding whole person development, the Government encourages students to enrich themselves by acquiring knowledge on the one hand, while developing their potential, cultivating a good personality, broadening their horizons and serving the community on the other. In this year's Policy Address, the Government also undertook to further support youth development by strengthening the youth network on a district basis. Mr Tsang encouraged young people to seize Hong Kong's advantageous position and to further equip themselves so as to contribute to the future development of society.

The seminar following the ceremony was the first event of the programme. The former Commissioner of Police, Mr Dick Lee; the founder of German Pool, Dr Edward Chan; explorer Dr Rebecca Lee; and four young professionals shared their valuable experience with the participants of the programme.

The participants will later join seminars and a leadership training camp, and undertake visits to Government departments, public bodies and private enterprises to learn more about their tasks. They will also represent Eastern District on visits the Mainland and Seoul for exchange activities. Ms Anne Teng also took the opportunity to thank the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong and the Korean International School for providing valuable advice on the visit to Seoul and the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Chai Wan) for providing logistical support to the programme.
