The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (July 15) the July 2014 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains two feature articles entitled "Foreign Affiliates Statistics of Hong Kong" and "Seasonal Adjustment of Current Account Statistics in Hong Kong's Balance of Payments".
"Foreign Affiliates Statistics of Hong Kong"
With increasing globalisation of the world economy, it becomes popular for multinational enterprises to provide services to customers in another economy through setting up affiliated companies abroad.
In view of the growing importance of services supplied via this mode, C&SD has developed a statistical framework for compiling relevant statistics, known as "foreign affiliates statistics (FATS)". This feature article introduces the statistical system for compiling inward FATS, and presents selected inward FATS data of Hong Kong in 2012. It also gives a brief account of the development in the compilation of Hong Kong's outward FATS.

"Seasonal Adjustment of Current Account Statistics in Hong Kong's Balance of Payments"
A research study has found that the current account statistics in Hong Kong's Balance of Payments (BoP) are subject to seasonal variations. As a result, seasonal adjustment of current account and its major components is performed using the X-12 ARIMA method. Seasonally adjusted current account statistics are compiled and disseminated as from the first quarter of 2014, with data series backcasted to the first quarter of 1999.
This feature article presents the compilation method of the seasonally adjusted current account statistics of Hong Kong. It also analyses the movements of the data series concerned in recent years.
