***********************************************************

A team of six secondary school students representing Hong Kong has obtained good results at the 55th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in South Africa, winning four silver and two bronze medals. The Hong Kong Team was ranked 18th this year, up from 31st in 2013.

The participating teams came from a total of 101 countries and regions this year compared with 97 last year. The IMO was held in Cape Town from July 6 to 13.

The four Hong Kong Team silver medallists were Hui Pak-nam (S6) and Wong Hing-shing (S6) from La Salle College, Wong Sze-nga (S6) from Diocesan Girls' School and Cheung Wai-lam (S4) from Queen Elizabeth School. The two bronze medallists were Yu Hoi-wai (S3) from La Salle College and Lau Chun-ting (S5) from Diocesan Boys' School.

The main objectives of the IMO are to promote mathematics education, foster friendly relationships among mathematicians all over the world, and nurture and stimulate the development of mathematically gifted young people. The success of the Hong Kong team this year once again demonstrated the fruitful collaboration of the Education Bureau (EDB), the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong) Committee (IMOHKC) in nurturing the mathematically gifted.

Members of the Hong Kong team, sent by the EDB, performed outstandingly in the IMO Preliminary Selection Contest - Hong Kong 2013 and received nine months of training in a series of enhancement programmes jointly organised by the HKAGE and the IMOHKC.

The EDB will support the IMOHKC to organise the 57th IMO in Hong Kong in 2016 in order to further promote mathematics and science education and identify more talents.
