The following is issued on behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund:
Five young talents in music or dance received Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund (HKJCMDF) Scholarships today (July 4).
The scholarships, totalling about $2.16 million, will support the awardees in pursuing further education abroad in the fields of music or dance, enabling them to contribute to the development of arts in Hong Kong upon completion of their studies.
The five young talents, namely Mr Chan Ting-yuen, Mr Cheng Chi-yuen, Mr Angus Lee, Miss Lily Wu and Miss Yiu Wing-chi, stood out among many applicants. They shared their thoughts during the award ceremony, gratefully acknowledged the funding support from the HKJCMDF and undertook to make the best of the opportunity to pursue further studies in music or dance overseas.
The three music scholarship awardees, bassoonist Mr Chan, oboist Mr Cheng and flautist Mr Lee, are graduates of the Bachelor of Music programme at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts (HKAPA). With the music scholarships, Mr Chan, Mr Cheng and Mr Lee will be going to Germany, France and the United Kingdom (UK) respectively to further their training in music performance.
As for the two dance scholarship awardees, Miss Wu, a graduate of the Bachelor of Dance programme at the HKAPA, will pursue a Master's Degree in dance movement psychotherapy in the UK, while Miss Yiu, currently a freelance dancer, will undertake a Master's Degree in musical theatre, also in the UK.
Joining the ceremony were the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Fund, Dr Pang King-chee; representative of the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) Mr Douglas So; the Principal Assistant Secretary for Home Affairs, Miss Wong Yuet-wah; members of the Board of Trustees of the Fund; Chairman Professor Chan Hing-yan and member Professor Johnny M Poon from the music audition panel of the scholarship; and Chairman Mr Thomas Brown and member Mr Yang Yuntao from the dance audition panel.
The HKJCMDF was set up in 1980 with a $10 million donation from the HKJC for the promotion and development of music and dance education and training in Hong Kong. In 1994, a further capital injection of $22 million was provided by the HKJC to meet the increasing demand for support. The Fund has so far (including this year) awarded 293 music and dance scholarships amounting to about $51.6 million.
