A person in custody was found hanging himself inside his cell in Shek Pik Prison today (July 3).
At 5.46 am, a patrolling officer found the 29-year-old male person in custody hanging by a piece of bed sheet tied on the grille bars of his cell. The officer immediately called for reinforcement.
Reinforcement staff arrived at the scene immediately and applied first aid before sending him to public hospital by helicopter for treatment. The man was certified dead by a medical officer at 7.10am.
The Correctional Services Department has reported the case to the Police for investigation. An inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court in due course.
The person in custody was sentenced to life imprisonment for the offence of murder.
