Chow Fan-fu lecture series to discuss masterpieces by Richard Strauss

     As this year is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department is presenting the lecture series "Great Masters and Their Timeless Masterpieces - Richard Strauss". The lectures will be given by acclaimed arts critic Chow Fan-fu on the topics of Strauss's operas and symphonic poems in August and October respectively.

     Strauss has long been positioned in Western music history as a colossal figure in Late Romanticism, as shown by his lieder, symphonic poems and operas. Three operas and three symphonic poems by Strauss which were critically acclaimed during his lifetime and are still popular nowadays have been selected by the speaker for in-depth discussion.

     The speaker Chow Fan-fu is an arts critic who has been hosting a variety of classical music and cultural programmes on Radio Television Hong Kong's Radio 4 since 1982. He is currently Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Chapter of the International Association of Theatre Critics and an examiner for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In 2011, he was awarded a Medal of Honour by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government for his continued and tireless efforts in the promotion of classical music and the appreciation of the arts. Publications authored by him include "Music Is Life", which was nominated for "Ten Best Books of 2006" and "Music with Love: The 30th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra", which was listed as one of the "Ten Best Books of 2005".

     All lectures will be conducted in Cantonese and will start at 7.30pm in the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum. Tickets priced at $50 (for each talk) are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis).
