*********************************************************

To celebrate the 17th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland, three "Vitality. Love @ HKSAR" Cultural Shows were held today (July 1) on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories respectively, attracting some 7,000 spectators.

Through a broad spectrum of cultural programmes, the Cultural Shows were aimed at providing an opportunity for citizens to share the joy of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and enhance their knowledge of Chinese traditional culture and the city's blend of East and West. It is also hoped the shows will help spread a feeling of positive energy, unity, vigour and social cohesion among the community, as well as encourage a spirit of mutual respect and harmony between Hong Kong and the motherland.

The three Cultural Shows were held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), Kowloonbay International Trade and Exhibition Centre, and the Heung Yee Kuk Building. Art groups, community groups, primary schools and secondary schools performed a variety of programmes including Chinese opera, classic singing hits, Tai Chi demonstrations, dancing, poetry recital, rope skipping as well as drum performances.

The Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan; the Director-General of the Coordination Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Shen Chong, and other guests officiated at the opening ceremony of the Cultural Show at the HKCEC. Seventeen teenagers born in 1997 were cordially invited to a birthday party where the spectators celebrated their birthdays by singing a birthday song together.

The "Vitality. Love @ HKSAR" Cultural Shows were organised by the Hong Kong Commerce, Industry and Professionals Association and the Hong Kong Cultural and Educational Exchange Association, co-hosted by the Home Affairs Department and participated by over 100 schools, community organisations and institutions.
