Celebration activities in Sha Tin for HKSAR 17th anniversary

     To celebrate the 17th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Sha Tin District Office (STDO) is rolling out a series of activities for the general public.

     Coming up this Sunday (June 29) is the "The Bike Orienteering Celebration Race", which will start and finish at Sha Tin Yuen Wo Playground. Thirty teams of about 100 participants will cycle a circular route along Ma On Shan Promenade and compete for awards by accomplishing orienteering tasks related to understanding the history of the reunification in the fastest time.

     The kick-off ceremony for the race will be held at 1.30pm at Sha Tin Yuen Wo Playground. Officiating at the ceremony will be the Chairman of the Sha Tin District Council, Mr Ho Hau-cheung; the District Officer (Sha Tin), Ms Cora Ho; the District Leisure Manager (Sha Tin) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Mr Cheung Wan-ching; and cyclist Choi Ki-ho who was a silver medallist at the 2010 Asian Games.

     Another vibrant event is the "Colour 17 Sha Tin~Vitality.Love@HKSAR", a youth talent show to be held at Sha Tin Town Hall Plaza at 3pm on July 6. The event aims to provide opportunities for young people to showcase their creativity and talent through music, street dance and Chinese dance performances.

     In addition, the STDO has also invited the acclaimed Penang Symphony Orchestra from Malaysia to present a special concert titled "A Midsummer Concert by Penang Symphony Orchestra" at Sha Tin Town Hall Plaza at 4.30pm on July 16. Eighty performers will play a series of classical and Malay music and the Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui; the Deputy Director General of New Territories Sub-office of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR, Ms Yang Xiaochan; the Chairman of Tourism Malaysia Corporation, Dr Ng Yen-yen; Mr Ho Hau-cheung, and Ms Cora Ho will be guests of honour at the event.

     Members of the public are invited to the show and the concert, which are free of charge.

     The celebration activities also included the Sketch HK Youth Painting Day held on June 22 at Artists' Corner in Sha Tin Park. The arts-themed event, aimed at bringing arts into the community, attracted around 200 teenagers aged 13 to 18.
