*****************************************************

The extensive network built up by Hong Kong-related business associations has contributed immensely to the close trade and economic relations between Hong Kong and the rest of the world, the Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Singapore, Mr Fong Ngai, said today (June 27).

Speaking at the gala dinner in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong-Singapore Business Association, Mr Fong said Hong Kong and Singapore have enjoyed strong ties over the years.

"Singapore is Hong Kong's fifth largest trading partner with trade of over HK$300 billion, and Hong Kong is among Singapore's top three export markets.

"There are some 330 Singaporean companies in Hong Kong, with close to 130 being regional headquarters or offices," he said.

Mr Fong said the Hong Kong-Singapore Business Association has played no small part in strengthening the ties between Hong Kong and Singapore.

Set up in 1994, the Hong Kong-Singapore Business Association has provided a networking platform for the Singapore business community, especially those with an interest in Hong Kong. It has helped members widen business opportunities and facilitated exchange of ideas and experiences.

"My office will continue to work closely with our partners, including the Hong Kong-Singapore Business Association, to forge even closer ties with Singapore as well as other Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states," Mr Fong said.

Mr Fong said at the dinner that since its return to China in 1997, Hong Kong has upheld the "One Country, Two Systems" principle, which is one of the cornerstones for its success. It has greatly benefited from the unique advantages brought about by "One Country, Two Systems" and attained remarkable achievements in economic and social development, and also on livelihood issues.

Over 400 guests from various sectors including chambers of commerce, the business sector, diplomatic missions and academia attended the gala dinner today.
