*****************************************************

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (June 27) investigating a case of Legionnaires' disease (LD) affecting a 47-year-old man.

The patient, with good past health, travelled alone to the Mainland on April 22. He has presented with fever and cough with blood-stained sputum since June 7. He was admitted to a hospital in the Mainland on June 10 and was transferred to a private hospital in Hong Kong for treatment on June 14. His clinical diagnosis was pneumonia. He is currently in stable condition.

His respiratory specimen tested positive for Legionella pneumophila upon laboratory testing by Queen Mary Hospital. Investigations are proceeding.

This is the 15th LD case reported to the CHP this year. In 2013 and 2012, 28 cases were filed in each year.

The public may visit the CHP's LD page (www.chp.gov.hk/en/content/9/24/2117.html) for further information and corresponding preventive advice.
