North Lantau Hospital to commence 24-hour A&E service in September

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     North Lantau Hospital (NLTH), which was built to serve the growing population in Tung Chung district and its vicinity, is scheduled to extend its Accident and Emergency (A&E) service to 24 hours with effect from midnight on September 25 (Thursday). A representative of NLTH updated the latest service development of the new hospital at the Island District Council meeting this afternoon (June 23).

     The Hospital Chief Executive of NLTH, Dr Nancy Tung said,"Since the service extension to 16 hours (from 8am to midnight) A&E service on January 7, 2014, the hospital has been closely monitoring the situation in close liaison with the community. With a higher demand on our service and the rising expectation of the local community for round-the-clock A&E services, the hospital has decided to commence the 24-hour A&E operation and inpatient service with effect from September 25 to provide more comprehensive care for the local population.

     "Regarding inpatient service, 20 acute beds and 20 convalescent beds will be in operation at 8am on September 24 in the initial phase. Outpatient service for surgery and orthopaedics and traumatology as well as the day rehabilitation centre will also commence in the third quarter of 2014-15 while a day procedure centre is planned for the fourth quarter.

     NLTH is one of the public hospitals under the Kowloon West Cluster of the Hospital Authority to serve residents in Tung Chung district.
