SEN and Steering Committee members visit restored landfills (with photos)
************************************************************

The Environment Bureau has set up the Steering Committee on Restored Landfill Revitalisation Funding Scheme to advise the Government on matters relating to the scheme. The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, the Chairman of the Steering Committee, Mr Bernard Chan, and various members today (June 19) visited restored landfills to explore better use of these sites by developing facilities for public enjoyment at the earliest opportunity.

The Secretary for the Environment and the Steering Committee visited first the restored Ma Yau Tong West Landfill in Kwun Tong to learn about its restoration and aftercare. Occupying a total flat area of about one hectare, the site has been partly developed as a sitting-out area for public use, while the remaining area is available for the development of other compatible uses.

The party then proceeded to Ngau Chi Wan Park in Wong Tai Sin, which is located on the restored Ngau Chi Wan Landfill. The park occupies an area of about four hectares and features a 90-metre archery range and facilities for archery training and tournaments.

Of Hong Kong's 13 restored landfills, some have been developed into recreational facilities for public use while some have been set aside for conservation or other purposes. The Chief Executive announced in the 2014 Policy Address that the Government had earmarked $1 billion to set up the Restored Landfill Revitalisation Funding Scheme to fund the development of recreational facilities or other innovative proposals for community use at the restored landfills. In this respect, the Environmental Protection Department held briefing sessions on the Restored Landfill Revitalisation Funding Scheme for non-profit-making organisations and national sports associations early this year. Applications are expected to be open to these organisations around the end of this year at the earliest.

The newly established Steering Committee on Restored Landfill Revitalisation Funding Scheme will give advice on operational arrangements and other related matters of the Scheme. The Committee comprises members from the fields of accounting, architecture, engineering, sports and social services as well as representatives from District Councils with restored landfills. Representatives of relevant bureaux/departments will also join the Committee as ex-officio members.
